What are Fibroid Tumors?

Tumors that grow outside or inside the uterine wall are referred to as Fibroid tumors. Though the tumors may become larger in size, they are rarely cancerous. The exact cause for fibroids is not known but its occurrence can be owing to a genetic cause. One can know about this condition by noting the symptoms of fibroid tumors.

Types of Fibroids: There are several types of fibroids

The Intra cavity Fibroids develop within the uterine cavity. Severe cramping and irregular bleeding between periods are symptoms of fibroid tumors (intra cavity).

The Intramural Fibroids expand inwards and grow in the uterine muscle. These can be diagnosed with a pelvic examination in the most common condition. Symptoms of fibroids tumors of this type are back pain or pelvic pain and heavy menstrual bleeding.

The Subserol Fibroids are those that outwardly expand through the wall by growing beneath the exterior portion of the uterus. Acute pain in the back and pelvic regions are symptoms of fibroid tumors of Subserol type.

The Submucosal Fibroids are those that develop below the interior lining of the uterus. These are very problematic and least common among all fibroid conditions. A prolonged menstrual period and heavy bleeding are the symptoms of fibroid tumors of this type.

Risk Factors-

Middle aged women who have had no children or those having a female relative suffering from this condition are more prone to having this problem. Even sedentary and overweight women, African American people etc can suffer from this, which can be found by means of the symptoms of fibroid tumors.

Symptoms of Fibroid Tumors-

The most common symptoms of fibroid tumors are the following:

* Long and heavy menstrual periods;

* Urinary problems due to bladder pressure;

* Constipation owing to the rectum’s pressure;

* Leg pain/lower back pain;

There may be lots of other symptoms of fibroid tumors for knowing about their presence. Though fibroids may not interfere with pregnancy, if this happens, the baby has to be delivered only by a cesarean section.

Tests-

The presence of fibroid tumors in a patient can be found out through the symptoms of fibroid tumors and also through the tests such as Ultrasound, Hysteroscopy, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Laparoscopy, Endometrial biopsy, Transvaginal Ultrasound, Computed Tomography (CT) scans etc.

Treatments-

There may be no symptoms of fibroid tumors in the case of small fibroid tumors and hence it may not require treatment of any sort. The fibroids will not be treated for some time, but it may be examined regularly. Patients may also be advised to stop using birth control pills containing high quantum of estrogen because estrogen is found to encourage the occurrence of tumors. The best way to diagnose this condition is by analyzing the symptoms of fibroid tumors and advocating treatments.
